I am in a restaurant on the 8th floor of a hotel in Chinatown. The food is average but the view is breathtaking. I am overlooking the river where boats carry passengers from one side to the other or just drive them around on one of the dinnercruises, recognized by flashing christmaslights and the Thai version of "Pokerface" and offkey karaoke that easily reaches up to the balcony.
The river is lined with golden domed wats and stupa's and Chinese temples and luxury 5-star hotels of every big name you can think of. To the left in the distance I see the skytrain flashing by against a backdrop of towering shoppingmalls. To the right and below unfolds a maze of smaller buildings and narrow streets crammed with motorbikes, tuktuks and mobile kitchens, selling everything from fried noodles to fresh fruit to whole fried fish on sticks.
As the sun is slowly disappearing behind the skyline the neonlights are taking over.
On the balcony are the two Chinese/Thai waitresses that serve Italian Coffee but don't understand the English menu they gave me, so I had to point out my dish on the Thai one. Luckily the order was the same or I could've ended up with sour fishhead curry. Yummy.
They're giggling.
Of course there's a romantic German couple admiring the sunset with a Singha beer. And there's a lonely middle-aged man with white socks in his sandals, talking to his cellphone with a thick French accent.
"Pattaya, yes."
"But darling, you know I'll come back next year. You can wait a year honey."
Pause.
"Young girls? How old?"
Pause.
"15 or 16 years old?"
Pause.
"Hmmm. Good. No I have to work. Lot of hard work in Europe"
Pause.
"I'll come back next year honey. I'm sure you can wait....Love you longtime"
I didn't make this up. Not even the 'love you longtime'.
Welcome to Bangkok...
